Greg Howe

DJ Michael Ealey of Streetwise Radio is playing jazz fusion, instrumental rock and hard rock guitarist Greg Howe. Being a musician’s wife, I have heard some amazing underrated artist over the years. Greg Howe is one talented musician’s that has been around for over thirty years. While writing this and listen to his music, Greg Howe has remarkable talent and versatility that makes is guitar playing superb. Greg Howe was born on the east coast, New York, New York. Now he resides in Long Beach, California. Greg Howe began playing the club scene in 1980’s in New York, Pennsylvania and New Jersey with his brother Albert. Greg Howe went solo in 1987 and released his self-titled debut album in 1988. He hit it out the park it was his biggest selling album because it was popular during the shred era. During his career he has put out 9 albums and in 2013 he is coming out with a self-titled studio album. Greg Howe’s versatility has enabled him to play with a diversity of our artists. The late great Michael Jackson, Christina Aguilera, Rihanna, Lady Antebellum, P Diddy, T-Pain, Enrique Iglesias, Salt-n-Pepa and Justin Timberlake to name a few. Some of my favorite songs of Greg Howe’s are ‘Punk Jazz’, ‘Jammin' on Sunny’, ‘Come And Get It’, ‘Garden of Harmony’ and ‘Song for Rachelle’. Jazz Saxophonist Grace Kelly

Grace Kelly was born Grace Chung on May 15, 1992 in Wellesley, Massachusetts. Grace is of Korean descent. In 1997 her mother remarried Robert Kelly. He legally adopted grace a couple of years later that is how she got the name Grace Kelly. Grace was fortunate to grow up in a family that appreciated music and the arts. Grace’s parents would play Stan Getz while having brunch. Grace fell in love with the saxophone and wanted to play, but was too young. At the age of six Grace started taking classical piano, but she preferred jazz because she could make up her own melodies. When Grace was seven she wrote a song titled “On My Way Home”. While in the 4^th grade Grace tried the clarinet, but switch to the saxophone in the 5^th grade. The saxophone was the instrument she always wanted to play. Grace left High School at 16, got her G.E.D and went to Berklee College of Music where she got her degree in Professional Music in December 2011. Grace was the youngest musician ever to be voted by Down Beat Magazine’s Critics Poll in 2009, 2010 and 2011 as Alto Saxophone Rising Stars. Grace Kelly’s talents don’t stop at jazz saxophonist. Her other talents are vocalist, songwriter, arranger, and bandleader. This young lady does it all. Grace Kelly is truly an jazz saxophone prodigy she has been around the world and played with the likes of some of the greats Wynton Marsalis, Dave Brubeck, Phil Woods, Lee Konitz, Esperanza Spalding, Dianne Reeves, Phil Collins, Harry Connick Jr., Dee Dee Bridgewater, Geri Allen, Ann Hampton Callaway, Cedar Walton Hank Jones, Keith Lockhart, Frank Morgan, Kenny Barron, Cedar Walton, Terri Lynne Carrington Chris Potter and the list goes on.  Her debut CD “Dreaming” was released in 2004. She was only 12 years old. Seven CD’s later Grace Kelly released the self-titled CD “Grace” in 2011.She is 19 years old and still blowing the saxophone like she has been doing it for 30 years or more. I like Grace Kelly she is a talented musician that we’re going to hear from for a long time to come. Trombone Shorty

Troy Andrews (Trombone Shorty) born January 2, 1986 has music in his blood. Trombone Shorty grew up in the Treme neighborhood of New Orleans’;he played in brass bands as a child and was a bandleader at the age of six. Trombone Shorty is the younger brother of James Andrews’s trumpeter and bandleader and he is the grandson of singer/songwriter Jessie Hill. In 2005, Trombone Shorty went on tour with Lenny Kravitz’s horn section. When the levees broke in New Orleans on August 29, 2005 Trombone Shorty along with other musicians from New Orleans got together in Austin Texas to do a benefit CD called “Sing Me Back Home”. I first heard Trombone Shorty’s music last year while I was riding in the car with my husband; I like the songs “Show Me Something Beautiful.” This young brother has played with various artists of different genres of music like U2, Green Day, Dave Mathews Band, Eric Clapton, Lenny Kravitz, Dr John and Wynton Marsalis one of my favorite trumpets players. Trombone Shorty performed in my hometown of San Jose California at the 2011 San Jose Jazz Festival I did not get to see him. I think this young brother is going to be around for sometime bringing that Trombone Shorty New Orleans jazz funk sound.

De Phazz is a downtempo jazz ensemble integrating modern turntablism and elements of soul, latin,trip hop and drum and bass into a lounge music sound. De Phazz is led by Pit Baumgartner, a German producer who changes his crew for every new album. Some of the more permanent members are Karl Frierson and Pat Appleton. Since the release of Detunized Gravity and Godsdog, De Phazz have appeared on the radar of listeners of equally innovative and sample-driven jazz by the likes of Amon Tobin and The Cinematic Orchestra. The band has released records on Mole Listening Pearls and Universal Jazz Germany along with single releases on Edel Records and United Recordings, and also remixes existing material.

We have been playing a number of songs from this brilliant artist on streetwise radio for a few months now.

Maceo Parker has stood the test of time. His early beginnings with James Brown, made him known as the early pioneer of the funk and hip-hop we still dance to today. It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon at San Jose Jazz Festival. Maceo blew his Sax horn like nobody I ever heard, the man is Funky, Jazzy and Bluesy. Maceo’s band was tight, the songs “Sing A Simple Song and  “Uptown Up” had the crowd on there feet. Maceo tribute to Ray Charles  “What I Say” was great. Maceo had this female singer, she put me in mind of Erykah Badu and Michele Chrisette she was so jazzy, bluesy and funky. In my opinion Maceo Parker gets better with age. He truly turned out the San Jazz Festival.

Maceo opened for Bass player Marcus Miller. Marcus Miller had some young musician backing him up. Most of the musician were in there Twenties. He had this Twenty Two year old Sax player, that young boy could blow that Sax. The drummer was driving every song and the keyboards were great.

Marcus Miller performed some of the music of Miles Davis, including “Tutu”, from the 1986 album Miller wrote and produce for the jazz legend.

Marcus Miller gave San Jose a taste of real jazz. I can say that the 2010 San Jose Jazz Festival was one that I won’t forget. I really enjoyed the people and the food.

Marcus Williams

It is not often that a new icon of music emerges, Marcus Williams is sure to be one of the next jazz icons to hit the music scene in years. A native of St. Louis, Missouri, Marcus was born and raised in a musical family. His father was a highly trained jazz drummer and educator; while his sister studied classical piano. Marcus musical foundation is based on the jazz, and R&B style. Later on in years, he was awarded a scholarship to attend the world renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston Mass. After school, Marcus took his time working with a number of top-notch media companies; composing and producing music for many projects. He has produced music for media giants such as Virgin Entertainment, Columbia Tri Star Pictures, Discovery Channel, 20th Century Fox Entertainment and many more.

After recording and producing music professionally for 15 years Marcus took back to his first instrument and love the trumpet. Streetwise Radio Welcomes Al Capone

Al/Capone is a high-energy six-piece smooth jazz band based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Al/Capone’s music, a mixture of jazz, R&B, funk, fusion and Latin, is contemporary and melody driven while always remaining true to its jazz roots.

Al/Capone’s latest project, an eleven song album entitled “Mr. Smooth,” features an all star lineup showcasing the talents of Alex Ligertwood (Santana, Billy Cobham, and Average White Band), Dean Brown, (David Sanborn, Brecker Brothers), Steven Wolf (Steely Dan, Grover Washington, Jr., Gil Evans Orchestra) and producer/keyboardist Jason Miles (Miles Davis, Sting, Luther Vandross).

At the heart of the group are Al/Capone founding members Jeep Capone (drums, percussion, keyboards, vocals) and Allen Young (trumpet, flugelhorn, valve trombone, EVI, keyboards, vocals). Rounding out the ensemble is a group of exceptionally talented players from the Minneapolis area including Jason Craft, keyboards, Peter Vircks, saxophone and flute, Vincent Rose, guitar, Chris Lomheim, keyboards, Mark Hoyt, background vocals and Graydon Peterson, bass.

Natalie Cole the daughter of the late great Nat King Cole, is one of my Favorite singers her songs were a part of my teenage years growing up.
Natalie started her career as an R&B star “This Will Be”, won her a
Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance Artist in 1975. In the same
year she also won a Grammy for “This Will Be” Best New Artist for the Inseparable album. Natalie was awarded a Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for “Sophisticated Lady” in 1976 and then again in 1977 Best
Female Vocalist American Music Award for gold certified “I’ve Got Love on
My Mind”. Natalie had two more platinum albums “Unpredictable” and “Thankful” another gold single for “Our Love” in 1977 one of my favorites.Natalie stared in her first television special on CBS in 1978, which gave
her another gold album for “Natalie Live”. Natalie had hits that followed
her television show like, “I Can’t Say No”, “Party Lights”, “I’m Catching
Hell”, “Be Thankful”, “Annie May”, “Sorry”, and “Stand By”. In 1979 “I Love You So“ earned her another gold album, then again in 1980, another
gold album for “Were The Best OF Friends” with Peabo Bryson. In the early
1980s Natalie dealt with a severe heroin and crack cocaine habit, she
dealt with it and over came her drug addition. By 1985 Natalie was back with a album titled Dangerous, on this album two singles called “Jump Start” a remake of Bruce Springsteen’s “Pink Cadillac” and a remake of her
father’s signature song. “When I Fall In Love”. “Good to Be Back” albums
came out in 1989 this album gave her more hits “Miss You Like Crazy”,“Wild Women Do”, and “I Do” with Freddie Jackson and “Starting Over
Again”. The album “Unforgettable…with Love” will be the best remembered
album of her career. This album featured her vocal arrangements of her
fathers greatest hits. Technology helped Natalie preformed a duet with her
father the song was Unforgettable. The Unforgettable album sold over 7
million copies, Natalie won several Grammy awards in 1991 for
Unforgettable. Natalie Cole had several hit jazz cd’s “Take A Look” went
gold and “Stardust” went platinum both these cd’s won Grammies. Natalie
Maria Cole is considered one of the core artist of the smooth jazz genre.
Her music is timeless and classic as well as her new material. In July
2008 Natalie was diagnosed with Hepatitis C due to drug use and in May 2009 Natalie received a kidney transplant. Natalie started touring the
fall of 2009, if she comes to the Bay Area you can best believe I’ll be
there.

Pat Metheny

Pat Metheny was born 55-yers ago in Lee's Summit, Missouri...a suburb near Kansas City.  After graduating from high school he moved to Florida to study music at the University of Miami, but left during his first semester. He was actually offered a teaching position soon afterward, but Metheny always knew in his heart that he was meant to play...not teach!

 

By the age of 20 he was on his way to becoming one of the most prominant and successful jazz guitarists of the 1970's and 80's, recording and touring throughout the world with his band 'The Pat Metheny Band'.

 

In 1975 Metheny joined vibraphonist Gary Burton, and recorded 'Bright Size Life', with bassist Jaco Pastorius and Drummer Bob Moses. The next track 'Watercolors' featured pianist Lyle Mays, who would co-write many songs with Metheny.

 

Their alliance with bassist Mark Egan and drummer Dan Gottlieb solidified 'The Pat Metheny Band'... which was also the title of their first album. 14 more would follow over the next 25 years, as the band toured the world, offering the unique sound of Metheny's Gibson ES-175 guitar.  Also featured were Mays' Oberheim and Sequential Circuit synthesizers, and Steinway piano. .

 

Metheny also ventured in other directions, releasing solo, trio, quartet, and duet recordings with musicians such as Jim Hall, Dave Holland, Roy Haynes, Toninho Horta, Chick Corea, Pedro Aznar, Herbie Hancock, John Schofield, and Joni Mitchell.

 

He even participated in side projects with performers like Omette Coleman, Nordic Jazz players Ulf Wakenius, E.S.T.,and Nils Landgren. Pat also played with female greats Silje Nergaard, Noa, and Ana Maria Jopek.

 

As for the guitar, Metheny not only continued the jazz tradition, but borrowed other tones, and made many unique alterations using the 12-String Electric, hollow-bodied Six-String Electric, and heavily used Roland guitar synthesizer. He even continues to play a custom-made Pikasso-1 42-String guitar built by Canadian Luthier Linda Manzer...who hand-made many acoustic guitars for Metheny.... including  the 'Sitar', 'Baritone', and 'Mini' guitars.

 

Metheny's earliest influence was Wes Montgomery, and his album 'Impressions:The Verve Jazz Sides"...which Metheny says taught him how to play!  Other inspired were Jim Hall, Joe Diorio, Kenny Burrell, and Joe Pass, as well as rockers Eddie Van Halen and Windham Hill. He's also a fan of Pop stars James Taylor, Bruce Hornsby, Joni Mitchell, and The Beatles.

 

But, Metheny's most powerful inspiration actually came from Brazilian Music--both the Euro-influenced Jazz sound of the' Bassa Nova', and the rhythmic Afro-Brazilian sounds of Northeast Brazil...where Pat has both lived and performed at different times. 

 

However, no matter where Pat Metheny plays, his unique style is enjoyed and loved by jazz listeners all over the world.

Miles Davis

MILES DAVIS

I listened to Miles Davis, bebop and his cool jazz, growing up, but I didn’t appreciate his music until I met my husband. Jazz Fusion and Free Jazz is what heard my husband play through out the years. This gave me a real
appreciation for the music Miles Davis gave to all of us. Miles Davis was considered the most influential jazz musician of the 20th century. Miles Davis was an American jazz trumpeter, bandleader, and composer. Being a
musician in Miles Davis band gave other musicians their names such as John
Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, Bill Evans, Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, John McLaughlin, Cannonball Adderley, Gerry Mulligan, Tony Williams, George Coleman, J.J. Johnson, Keith Jarrett and Kenny Garrett. It is amazing that Miles Davis didn’t die of heroin overdose like his friends Fats Navarro and Freddie Webster. If he had then we probably would not be exposed to the great jazz music we have today.
